Part of La Política’s mission is to cover the nascent Latino politics in states where the Hispanic population has exploded over the past five to fifteen years. Kansas is one of those States and the Dodge City Daily Globe recently ran a piece on how Hispanics are under-represented in city and county government. The article contains what I consider a surprising piece of information:
People of Hispanic or Latino origin accounted for 42.9 percent of Ford County’s population in 2005, compared with 8.3 percent for the entire state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Web site.
I knew the state´s meatpacking plants had attracted large numbers of Mexican immigrants but I hadn´t realized the percentage of the overall population was that high.
